Book now for the 2010 Wild Turkey Season.

April 17 - May 09

Tim’s guide service is located in some of the best Wild Turkey woods in KY. Because Tim and the other guides Larry and Danny, have lived in the area all of their lives, they have permission to hunt private land where no other hunters have access. They have available more than 1000 acres of prime Turkey woods and you may hunt 2 or 3 different tracts depending on the activity of the birds. It is not unusual to work 3 or 4 birds in one day if needed. In KY you are only allowed one bird per day with a limit of two Toms in the Spring season.

You will meet your guide for the day at 5:30AM and will usually be in the woods just after daybreak. Your guide will use his skills as an outdoorsman as well as expert caller to try to locate a gobbler. If a Tom respounds he will quickly try to get you into the perfect position for him to call the bird in. Many times clients have killed the first bird that gobbles. Other times the Toms might not cooporate and when that happens you are in for the hunt of your life.

You may have to move quickly or freeze where you are to get into position. Some times the bird will move toward you without hesitation, other times it can seem like an eternity before he starts to come in. If there are some hens around it can take some expert calling and patience. Either way the excitement of the chase is like no other hunting experience you will ever have.

Your guide is going to work very hard and do everything possible to help you have a successful hunt. Sometimes even when everything seems right the gobbler will get the best of you. Your guide will do his best at all times. He wants you to get a bird as much as you do. Please appreciate the experience for what it is. Even if you are an experienced Turkey hunter you will learn more in 2 or 3 days than you could in years of hunting alone.

As with any type of hunting, it is better to have several days or more available for your hunt. Turkey's are very wiry and can at times be tough to hunt, if it was always easy why bother.

Enjoy your total experience. Hunting is supposed to be fun and exciting and your attitude and effort will help to make the hunt one you won't forget. Remember, it is ok to laugh and talk with your new friends. Relax and enjoy yourself and you will reminisce about this time for years to come.

This year we had a number of hunters get their first birds.

Some tips for a successful hunt

A minimum of 20 pellets in the head and neck area at 30 yards is a good pattern

Pattern your shotgun. Pattern your shotgun again. I can’t stress the importance of this enough. Turkey chokes and magnum loads of shot do not always shoot the way your field loads with an improved cylinder choke do. We highly recommend Holographic scopes or at least fiber optic sights adjustable for windage and elevation. Also if possible try several chokes and at least two different shells. It will surprise you how much difference in your pattern there can be. We had 8 clients miss good shots at birds this year alone. Practice and you will greatly increase your odds of getting your gobbler. If you are not convinced that the proper choke and shell makes a difference, check this out. http://www.jesseshunting.com/articles/hunting/category14/11.html

Be familiar with your weapon. Safety is mandatory and you need to know proper loading, carrying and use of the safety. It is important that after you fire your weapon you immediately put the safety on. Your guide will be in front of you as he rushes to the downed bird. If a second shot is needed you can always take the safety off when in position.

This part of KY is relatively hilly and you need to be prepared to do a good bit of walking up and down hill. Good, broken in waterproof boots are a must.

Before leaving home go to our link “Local Weather” and see what clothing to bring. Better to layer on the heavy side than ruin a hunt because of the weather. Bring rain gear also. Camo clothing, face mask and gloves are a given. We highly reccomend that you camoflague your gun also. There are many types of gun camo available at your local hunting shop or on line at www.cabelas.com or www.basspro.com.

It is not necessary to be a good caller. Your guide will take care of it for you. However if you want to bring some calls your guide will be happy to help you learn how to properly call in a bird. We recommend you let your guide call the first bird you kill. If you want to try to call in the second bird you may or just let your guide do it and he can help you with your calling in the down time.

Put a snack in your pocket. If you get on a tough bird it might be a long hunt! A water bottle is a good idea also. Never bring anything red, white or blue into the Turkey woods. These are the colors of a gobblers head. Safety! Safety! Safety!
